Easter in the Ghetto with Pink Pearl and Oaken Events

The season of Easter reminds us of the ultimate love Christ had for his children. In the same vein, Pink Pearl Foundation and Oaken events extended a measure of love to the children living in the Ajegunle community.

“Since government cannot totally get to the grassroots it is important for individuals, Non-governmental organisations and corporate bodies to imbibe the culture of giving as part of their corporate social responsibility”. This giveaway is just one of the things we do aside from creating awareness for breast and cervical cancer” said, Grace Agbanajelu, representative of Pink Pearl Foundation.

The event tagged ‘Ajegunle Easter Giveaway’ was held on the 6^th of April 2012 at the LA primary school complex, behind Ajeromi Local Government Secretariat, Ajegunle and played host to over 5000 children and 600 adults. It was all fun and games for the children as they ate, danced and cheered during the different competitions.

“Just as we had the December Giveaways, Easter reminds us of God’s selfless sacrifice of his only son, Jesus Christ, by giving him up on the cross to die for the sins of all mankind so, we planned this event to reach out to young ones and families who are too often forgotten this season”, said Mrs Ayiri Oladunmoye (CEO Oaken Events). “A lot of us connect and share love with our family and friends but do not remember to spread the love to people who may not enjoy these privileges. In addition to reaching out directly, we are using these events to encourage the spirit of giving.”

Medals were given to winners and the children were treated to outstanding musical performances from Yellow Banty and Pupa Shrieff. Gift Items of different types were also given to the children, which marked the highlight of the event.

 “I enjoyed myself today; I had indomine to eat at home. I want to thank the organisers for coming to celebrate Easter with us; I want them to come back next year”, Azeezat, a primary 6 student said after receiving her gift. The adults were not left out as they also got items to take along.

The event also played host to a breast and cervical cancer awareness lecture that stressed on early detection.  Representatives from Tolu Medical Centre were on ground to provide free breast cancer screening to women present.  20 women were screened and 2 were found with breast infections.

 

 

 

“Well it was an awkward but educating experience. I finally learnt how to carry out a self-breast exam properly; how to position my arms, how to check and where to check”, Miss Doris said after her breast cancer screening. Speaking on the event Miss Doris said “the smile on the faces of the children made attending worthwhile. The whole event was awesome. I am glad I didn’t miss it”.

This event was supported by Tolu Medical Centre, Staco Insurance Limited, Icare Foundation, mypassionmylife media, laterna bookshop, buttercups, wedding store, Zalitude events, Teggies Bar and 12 baskets. Other attendees included the Education Secretary, Honourable Adewale Adeogun and Daddy Showkey.
