UNESCO has designated Monday, 23rd April 2012 as World Book and Copyright Day to promote reading, publishing and copyright all over the world. To mark this day in Nigeria, Paperworth Books wants to inspire individuals and organisations to give out at least 5,000 Nigerian books free to school children and others in local communities all over the country.
The aim of the programme is to have interested stakeholders purchase copies of any of the following Nigerian novels and children's books:
· Tomorrow Died Yesterday by Chimeka Garricks (Paperworth)
· I Do Not Come To You by Chance by Adaobi Nwaubani (Cassava Republic)
· Fine Boys by Eghosa Imasuen (Farafina)
· The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives by Lola Shoneyin (Cassava Republic)
· Any of the Lantern Adventure Series – a range of 67 children's storybooks
· Any of the Lantern Folk Tale Series – a range of 16 children's storybooks
Then, on Monday, April 23rd purchasers will give out their free Nigerian books to members of their immediate community. These books cater to a wide range of reading levels (from early readers to full-range novels) and all deal with the complexities of life in modern Nigeria. Plus, they have all been written and published in Nigeria.
We encourage everyone to join this project by buying a book to give out to friends and family, company employees, colleagues, and any child they know. In particular, we would like to encourage donations to schools and orphanages in your local communities.
And these books are highly affordable. The average cost of any of the children titles is no more than N500 and no more than N1,500 for any of the adult titles. For organisations or individuals interested in bulk purchases, discounts of up to 15% can be arranged - depending on the quantity of the order.
The vision of this initiative is twofold: First, to support every aspect of the Nigerian book industry from authors to publishers and booksellers. Second, it is to encourage Nigerians to interact with books for pleasure – outside the sphere of formal education and its required texts.
We are sure that receiving the gift of a book will spark an interest in and an appreciation for reading that will boost people's literacy levels. We are also proud that this initiative is in keeping with a long international tradition.
