The Central Working Committee of The Future Awards 2012 has announced The Down Syndrome Foundation of Nigeria as the selected charity for The Future Awards 2012.
“Each year we choose a charity organisation we would work with and cease the opportunity of the platform which The Future Awards provides to bring the attention of the public to various human conditions that exist in our environment which we can contribute our quota to change them.” Said a statement from the committee.
The Down Syndrome Foundation of Nigeria is a non-profit organisation which seeks to provide care for children with Downs Syndrome some of which have been abandoned by their parents and society on the basis of culture and myths that tend to stigmatize them.
Down Syndrome (DS) s a genetic condition involving an extra chromosome, which occurs around the time of conception. Globally, it is estimated that for every 800 babies born, one will have Down Syndrome. People with DS usually have a certain degree of learning disability (problem with reading, writing, communication and speech
difficulty) and are also prone to medical problems (40%-50% of babies with DS are born with congenital heart problems), half of which require heart surgery.
The Down Syndrome Foundation of Nigeria seeks to improve the children’s lot in life by providing educational, rehabilitation and counseling services which we believe will make. The educational assessment which we offer the children reveals their strengths and weaknesses and bespoke care is arranged for each child since all children are not equal.
Donations are expected from kindhearted individuals who would like to help in their unique way to augment the efforts which the DSFN is undertaking to make life more meaningful to the children.
Guests attending the awards Nominees Reception on Saturday, August 4 in Lagos are requested to come in with contributions in cash and kind.

The Foundation has many immediate needs to achieve its goals which include:
1. MEDICAL NEEDS
Urgent corrective surgery for our kids with heart defects. Physio/speech therapy dental/ophthalmic check-up/treatment.
2. EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
Construction of our 3 acres of land for permanent Resource Centre incorporating:
a) School structure
b) Residential quarters/rooms
c) Recreational facilities
d) Educational aids/Audio Visual Aids (charts, flash cards, toys etc)
e) Vocational materials i.e. Fashion designing, hair dressing, textile, bead making, catering, art/craft, music.
f) Clinic
g) Equipment for a residential programme; Mattresses, pillows, food stuffs etc
3. ADMINISTRATION/SOCIAL SERVICES
To facilitate our work we would require the following items:
Shuttle bus for the children desktop and laptops computers, printers scanner and UPS internet facilities overhead projectors photocopier generator set.
4. EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Complete set of football kit, footballs, basketballs etc swimming kits bicycles.
